About the Society

The choir has been a regular feature of the musical scene in Wymondham, Norfolk, since it was formed in 1980 under the direction of Maxwell Betts. Subsequent Music Directors Keith Shaw, Peter Wills, Philip Luke and our current conductor Claire Dixon have each brought their own distinctive style to familiar, much loved choral works and have broadened the Society's repertoire through the introduction of new works, including some of their own compositions.

The Society attracts members from a wide area: from Norwich in the north to the Waveney Valley in the south and Watton to the west. We enjoy the pleasure of singing in a congenial atmosphere in some of the area's most beautiful churches. Concerts are performed to high musical standards with professional soloists and usually with an orchestra. Our three major performances annually raise money for charity.

In 2010 works performed by the choir included Stanford's Songs of the Fleet, Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs and Bach's Christmas Oratorio Parts I-III for their thirtieth anniversary concert. The choir performed Brahms’ Requiem in St. Peter Mancroft church in Norwich in 2008, Mozart's Requiem in 2009, Haydn's The Seasons with The Amadeus Orchestra of London in that magnificent church in March 2010 and Dvorak's Stabat Mater with the same outstanding orchestra in April 2011. Each year the choir performs in Wymondham Abbey during the summer Festival and also informally for local events.

Many of our members sang in the “Scratch “ Celebration for Sir David Willcocks at the Royal Albert Hall in London in May. We have also performed there in the Verdi, Mozart and Brahms Requiem concerts. Overall, the Society’s repertoire is very varied.

We always welcome new members and supporters.
